management should be left to some other agency, but since this would
require the creation of such an agency, it was decided that the Hall of
Records should take responsibility. What we accomplish within the next
year or two will determine whether this decision was a wise one and
whether we should attempt to do more than initiate the program. Certainly
we cannot do more without expanding our staff.

Finally, I am pleased to report that the last General Assembly pro-
vided $55,000 for the rehabilitation of our air-conditioning system. In my
last report I pointed out that the present system, installed in 1934, has
ceased to be of any value and that beginning with the summer of 1947
we have observed increasing damage to the records. Plans have already
been submitted to the Chief Engineer of the State, and it is expected that
before next summer we shall have the new system in operation.
