GENTLEMEN :

The publication of the forty-fifth volume of the Archives of Maryland,
which should have appeared in the year 1926, has been unavoidably delayed
by the death of the editor, Bernard Christian Steiner, which occurred before
the volume had been fully prepared for the press.

The loss of Dr. Steiner, unquestionably the outstanding authority on Mary-
land history, is felt by none more keenly than by his associates on the Publi-
cation Committee of the Maryland Historical Society, who have so long
enjoyed the advantage of his peculiar qualifications for the position of editor
of the Archives of Maryland, which he has held for the past ten years.

In the desire that an adequate record be made of Dr. Steiner's services to
the history of his state, the committee has intrusted the writing of the Intro-
duction of this volume to Lawrence C. Wroth, Librarian of the John Carter
Brown Library, a scholar deeply interested in early Maryland, and one who
was for many years closely associated with Dr. Steiner. Mr. Wroth gives an
interesting summary of Dr. Steiner's numerous and important contributions
to the history of Maryland.
